The call: “The compressor is dead”
In November 2024, a community college called us about an ice maker in its culinary kitchen. The machine had stopped making ice overnight. The maintenance supervisor had already decided the compressor was bad, and he wanted approval to order a replacement Tecumseh compressor before the end of the week.
I understand why he landed there. Compressor failures are loud, expensive, and easy to blame. But I'm a quality/compliance manager. I review roughly 200 compressor-related warranty claims a year, and my team tags every returned part with photos, amps, and pressure readings before we approve anything. In Q1 2024, I rejected 11% of first-time claims because the paperwork didn't match what was actually on the bench. I've learned that the story “the compressor died” is usually incomplete.
So I told the supervisor we would come out and verify before spending money. He wasn't happy about it. That visit turned into one of the more useful service calls I've been on.
What the maintenance tech missed
The ice maker sat in an alcove at the back of the teaching kitchen. The maintenance tech had already followed a YouTube tutorial on how to clean ice maker components. He dumped the ice, removed the bin, sanitized the interior, and replaced the water filter. That part of the machine was clean. The problem was on the other side of the unit.
While walking through the building, I noticed that the mechanical room next door was in the middle of a boiler installation. The boiler contractor had fire blankets and extinguishers staged, supplied by the district's regular safety equipment supplier in Tecumseh. The dust from that project, though, was not staying in the mechanical room. It had traveled under the door and settled into the kitchen's equipment vents.
I knelt down and pulled the front louver off the ice maker. The condenser coil looked like the bottom of a shop vacuum. Fine construction dust had packed the fins so tightly that almost no air could move through them.
The tech said he had already tried to blow it out with a Dewalt blower. He had, but he blew from the outside of the cabinet, which pushed the dust deeper into the coil. What looked like a clean coil from the front was a solid wall of debris from the back.
Here is the part that matters: a blocked condenser coil makes a compressor work like it is dying. Discharge pressure climbs. Current draw climbs. The overload protector trips. The compressor hums, clicks off, cools down, and tries again. To someone listening without gauges, that sounds exactly like a seized compressor.
The actual repair cost almost nothing
We removed the shroud, brushed the condenser from the inside out, sprayed on an approved coil cleaner, rinsed it carefully, and dried the area with the same Dewalt blower. We also cleaned the fan blade and checked the compressor terminals. The windings were within spec, the start components were within spec, and there was no short to ground.
The compressor, a genuine Tecumseh unit, was never broken.
I powered the machine back on. Within a few minutes, the suction pressure started pulling down. About twenty minutes later, the ice maker began its first harvest cycle.
The original quote for the compressor replacement was around $1,900: remanufactured compressor, filter drier, refrigerant, labor, and disposal. The actual cost of our visit was a few hours of labor, one bottle of coil cleaner, and a new access panel gasket. The compressor stayed in service, and the spare part stayed in our warehouse.
I would rather be told the true cost on day one. The supplier who lists everything upfront, even when the total looks higher, usually costs less by the end of the job.
What I check before I approve any compressor swap
Tecumseh compressors do fail. I've approved plenty of replacements. But I've also seen too many compressors blamed for dirty coils, bad capacitors, weak relays, and simple lack of airflow.
Before replacing any compressor, I want to see the basics in writing:
- Actual running amps compared to the rating plate value
- High-side and low-side pressure readings while the unit is struggling
- Condenser coil condition and condenser fan operation
- Start relay and capacitor test results
- Compressor winding resistance values and a megger reading if possible
When a quote skips those checks, the price is not transparent. It's a guess with a dollar sign on it. A replacement compressor is sometimes the right answer, but it should be the last answer, not the first one.
And when the replacement is necessary, I still want the full picture: the exact Tecumseh model number, refrigerant type, oil type, capacitor rating, and application. A compressor is not just a metal cylinder with two pipes. It is selected for a specific operating envelope. The vendor who tells you which tests were run and which specs were used is the vendor who is actually trying to help you.
The college kitchen called us back a month later. The ice maker was still running and the condenser was still clean. That call reminded me why I do this job the slow way. In refrigeration, the obvious explanation is often the expensive one. The truthful explanation is usually somewhere behind the dust.
