I've been doing refrigeration service work for 9 years, and I've personally made—and documented—14 significant mistakes in that time. Total cost: roughly $4,300 in wasted equipment, rework, and lost accounts. Now I keep a checklist on the truck for every Tecumseh compressor call. - Run capacitor (if the model has one): verify it reads within rated microfarads.
The compressor might be completely fine. The relay is the cheapest thing to replace—and the first thing to fail.
Step 3: Confirm the refrigerant type and charge before you open the system
I once assumed 'same specs' meant the same refrigerant across two identical-looking units. Didn't verify. Turned out one display case was running R134a and the other R404A. Different oil, different pressures, different charge weights. The replacement compressor I bolted in was correct—for the wrong refrigerant. 3-day delay, flushed lines, and a $680 lesson.
Tecumseh nameplates list the refrigerant and the factory charge. Find it, document it, and don't rely on the customer's memory of 'what it used to run.' If the system was converted at some point, the nameplate might not tell the whole story. Check the actual refrigerant in the loop before you match compressors.
Step 4: Pull a proper vacuum. 500 microns. Hold it.
In September 2022, I took a shortcut on a rush job. Storefront cooler, dead compressor, store manager watching me work. I had two hours to decide: delay the reopening and do the evacuation right, or get the compressor in and hope the vacuum was good enough. I chose wrong.
I pulled a vacuum for ten minutes and backfilled. Two weeks later, we caught the failure when the manager called saying the cooler was warm again. Moisture in the system formed acid, and the acid killed the new compressor from the inside. That disaster cost $890 in parts and labor—plus the credibility hit that follows you around.
The right way: vacuum the system down to 500 microns, close the valve, and hold for 30 minutes. If the pressure rises, you've got a leak or residual moisture. Find it before you charge, not after.
Step 5: If the job includes a thermostat replacement, sensing bulb placement matters more than the thermostat itself
Thermostat replacement is one of the most common service-after-repair tasks I do. The thermostat opens and closes the circuit that powers the compressor, so it's tempting to think 'any competent tech can swap one.' Then the unit short-cycles and you're back next week. The culprit is usually the sensing bulb, not the thermostat.
Common mistakes I've made and fixed:
- Strapping the bulb to the liquid line instead of the suction line
- Leaving it exposed to ambient air, so it reads store temperature instead of evaporator temperature
- Forgetting to insulate the bulb after strapping it in place
The bulb needs to track the evaporator outlet temperature. Strap it tightly to the suction line, insulate it, and route the capillary tube so it can't vibrate against metal. A misplaced bulb will short-cycle a perfectly good compressor. I've done it. It's humbling.
Step 6: Acid test the system and replace the filter drier. Every. Single. Time.
This is the step people skip. The third time I replaced a burned-out compressor without checking for acid, I finally created a verification checklist. Should've done it after the first.
When a compressor fails, it can leave acid in the refrigerant and oil. If you install a new compressor without flushing—or at minimum testing and replacing the filter drier—that acid eats the new unit. It might take a week or six months, but it'll die.
The acid test takes five minutes and costs a few dollars. A filter drier is maybe $15 for most light commercial sizes. Skipping them turns a one-day repair into a warranty callback for a problem that shouldn't have existed.
Step 7: The other calls that sneaked onto your day
Not every day is a compressor swap. A few related service requests show up often enough that I've built mini checklists for them, too.
How to clean a countertop ice maker
Same logic as a compressor system, just smaller. The condenser coil on a countertop ice maker gets dusted over, the little compressor runs hot, and the ice comes out thin or not at all. Vacuum the coil, run a food-safe descaler through the water path, and replace the water filter if the unit has one. Twenty minutes makes the difference between a working machine and a mystery warranty call.
Water heater maintenance
Yes, I know this isn't Tecumseh territory. Customers ask anyway because I'm the tech who shows up. What I'll do is test the pressure relief valve and recommend an annual flush. What I won't do is pretend to be a plumber—boundaries build trust. It looks higher than the 'compressor only' quote. It's also the one that doesn't come back with surprises. Transparent pricing has kept customers trusting me through some ugly failures.
Verify current prices before you quote. Tecumseh compressor pricing as of March 2025 has moved enough from last year that stale invoices will embarrass you. Call your distributor.
