Tecumseh Compressor Serial Number Lookup: 7 Questions, Answered by a Quality Inspector

If you’re here because a repair just stopped and the part number is a mystery, this page is worth a quick read before you call anyone. I work in the refrigeration components side of Tecumseh, and part of my job is reviewing failed compressors and warranty claims. What I see most often is not a defective compressor. It’s a compressor that was the wrong spec for the machine it was bolted into. Here are the questions I hear from technicians, distributors, and DIY owners every week.

Where Do I Find the Tecumseh Compressor Serial Number?

On hermetic units, the nameplate is welded to the compressor shell, usually on the side facing the condenser fan. On semi-hermetic models it may be riveted near the service valve plate. You don’t need to remove the compressor to read it in most installations—just bring a flashlight and a phone camera.

Once you find it, record both the model number and serial number. The model tells me what the compressor is. The serial tells me when it was made and gives us traceability. If you photograph the plate before wiping it, the photo may still be readable even if the tag is oil-stained.

What Does a Tecumseh Compressor Serial Number Lookup Tell You?

A serial lookup pulls up the build details for that exact unit, and where the original number is intact, it confirms the model line. But here’s the thing: I also ask for the model number because the model carries the engineering data—refrigerant, voltage, application, capacity. The serial alone does not tell a parts person whether this is the R134a version or the R404A version. It is a verification tool, not a shortcut. In our Q1 2025 claims audit, the biggest cause of returned “defective” parts was not a manufacturing issue—it was the wrong replacement being fitted in the first place.

I’ve also seen cases where the only difference between two compressors is one letter in the model prefix. That letter can change the application from medium-temperature to low-temperature. So if a parts lookup is unsure, ask for the exact model.

Does a Tecumseh Snow Blower Use the Same Serial Number Lookup?

No. The engine on a snow blower may be a Tecumseh Snow King or similar, but that was the small-engine side of the business, which shut down years ago. Those engines use a different parts catalog and a different series of model and serial numbers. A compressor lookup won’t be any help there.

For a Tecumseh snow blower engine, find the spec label on the blower housing—it’s usually around the top of the engine shroud, not on the frame of the snow blower itself. Copy down the full model/spec/serial string. I don’t carry those engine decode tables in my head; I’m on the compressor side. Even my own starting point would be a dealer that still has access to the archived Tecumseh engine parts listings.

Why Would a Space Heater Need a Tecumseh Compressor?

Let’s clear up one thing first: if your space heater is an electric resistance heater, there is no compressor in it at all. The Tecumseh name on that appliance is likely from a different product line, not the sealed compressor you’d replace.

But if you’re talking about a heat-pump space heater—a mini-split, a ducted split, or a packaged unit used to heat a shop—then yes, that system has a compressor, and in many cases the original is a Tecumseh. The replacement has to be matched to the heating capacity, the refrigerant, and the discharge temperature range the unit will see. A compressor for a small air conditioner can look identical and still not survive the heating cycle. Match the model, not the shape.

Can I Put Any Tecumseh Compressor in a Refrigerated Air Dryer?

You can put it in—the real question is how long it will stay alive. A refrigerated air dryer’s compressor runs long hours and sees higher discharge temperature than a typical walk-in cooler application. That’s because the dryer has to pull compressed air down to a low dew point regardless of the ambient temperature around it.

From the outside, a compressor for a refrigerated air dryer and a compressor for a refrigeration cabinet look almost identical. What changes is the rating of the valve system, the motor’s heat tolerance, and the oil management. If you fit a unit that was not intended for this duty, it will often run fine in cool weather and fail in the first hot week. I’ve reviewed replacements in our audits that showed clear signs of overheating, and in every case the original part had been swapped for one labeled “equivalent.” The price difference was a fraction of the service call that came after.

Does Tecumseh Make a Can-Am X3 Air Filter?

Straight answer: no. The Can-Am X3 is built by BRP, and its air filter is not a Tecumseh part. You sometimes see a Tecumseh part number appear in a cross-reference for a Can-Am X3 air filter, and I want you to be very careful with that. Cross-reference tables are built from physical measurements. If the inner diameter and outside diameter line up, the software says “compatible.” It will not tell you whether the media flows enough air, whether the seal holds under vibration, or whether the filter can handle the dust load an off-road vehicle sees.

An engine air filter is not just a ring of foam. It is an engineered component. The right filter for your Tecumseh-engine rebuild or your Can-Am air box is the one that was designed for that specific air box and airflow. If you buy by the ruler instead of the part number, you are creating a problem that isn’t covered by any warranty—and that’s the same philosophy we apply to compressor replacement parts.

Why Is the OEM Replacement Worth More Than a Cheap “Equivalent”?

This is the question I appreciate, because it’s the right one to ask. A compressor is a sealed assembly. The buyer cannot inspect the winding, the valve reeds, the piston clearance, or the oil charge before installation. The price difference between a no-name unit and an OEM replacement is usually much smaller than the cost of doing the job twice.

What you get with the factory part is a controlled process: the compressor was run-tested against a known performance curve, the serial was recorded, and the refrigerant and oil were matched. If something goes wrong, there is a paper trail. If you buy a gray-market, re-labeled, or cross-referenced unit, you don’t get the spec—you get a guess.

Let me give you a real example. In a claim we reviewed, a service company saved $120 on the “same” compressor from an online marketplace. The fit was right, but the unit ran hot. When the thermal overload finally killed it, the second visit, the compressor, and the lost product cost the customer more than four times the original saving. You know what the second replacement was? The OEM model they should have bought the first time. In my experience, the cheapest purchase price is often the most expensive compressor you can install.
