The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong
If you're about to order Tecumseh compressor parts, read this first. It's a 7-step checklist that has saved our shop roughly $12,000 in avoidable ordering mistakes since I started using it. No physics lesson, no theory. Just the checks I run on every single Tecumseh compressor order — because I've personally made every mistake on this list.

This sounds too basic to be a "step." But here's what happens in reality: the nameplate is a small metal tag on the side of the compressor, usually covered in a film of grease and dust. When you can't read it, you start guessing. Guessing is how you end up with a Tecumseh refrigerator compressor with the wrong displacement.
The mistake I made: In 2020, I ordered a compressor for a True merchandiser without writing down the model number. I just knew "it's a Tecumseh." Turns out Tecumseh makes dozens of refrigerator compressor models. The one I got pumped too little refrigerant for the application. $380 and a week of downtime, plus the humiliation of sending a photo of the nameplate to the distributor so he could fix my mistake for me.
Check: Photo the nameplate. If it's too worn to read, call your distributor with the unit's model number instead. Never trust memory for this.
Step 2: Confirm the Refrigerant Before Anything Else
The refrigerant is the blood type of the system. Get it wrong and nothing else matters. A compressor built for R12 won't run happily with R134a, and one built for R134a won't handle R290 (propane) or R600a (isobutane) safely. R600a compressors, by the way, are now standard in most new household refrigerators, and they are not drop-in replacements for older R134a models.
I'm not a refrigeration engineer, so I can't speak to the full thermodynamics of why each refrigerant class needs a different compressor. What I can tell you from 8 years of ordering parts is: if the refrigerant type is wrong, nothing else in the order matters.
Check: What refrigerant is on the nameplate? Does the compressor model you're ordering support it?
Step 3: Verify Voltage and Phase
Most residential and light commercial refrigeration in North America runs on 115V or 208–230V, single-phase. The trap is three-phase. If you mostly touch small reach-in coolers, three-phase might not even be on your radar until you open the access panel and see six wires on the contactor instead of two.
I don't have hard data on how often this gets ordered wrong industry-wide, but based on our order history, voltage and phase errors account for about 15% of our returns. It's a mistake that only exists when you're rushing.
Check: Voltage and phase are on the nameplate. Read them twice.
Step 4: Decide Whether You Need a Bare Compressor or the Whole Condensing Unit
People search for "a compressor" and stop there. But consider this: if the compressor seized because the system ran hot, the condenser fan motor and blower motor lived in that same overheated environment. They took the same abuse. Adding a $90 blower motor to the order is cheaper than a second service call in two weeks. At $150–250 per service call, that's math, not an upsell.
Shipping plays a role here too. A relay fits in a USPS large envelope (First-Class Mail is $1.50 as of January 2025), but a blower motor doesn't. The cheapest way to ship a blower motor is to put it in the same carton as the compressor. That means ordering them together.
A full condensing unit includes the compressor, condenser coil, condenser fan motor, and often the receiver. If the coil is still clean and solid, a bare compressor plus a fan motor is usually enough. If the coil is beat up, the condensing unit gets you to a known-good state in one order.
Check: What else was running hot while the compressor was failing? Order replacements for those parts now, in the same order.
Step 5: Cross-Reference the Part Number Using the Official Lookup
Tecumseh model numbers go back decades. An "AE" prefix didn't mean the same thing in 1998 as it does today, and the same physical compressor sometimes had three different part numbers depending on the OEM. This is exactly why manufacturer cross-reference charts exist.
I have a genuine gift for misremembering digits. In 8 years I've sent the wrong part number to a job site 4 times. Same pattern every time: I looked up the number, thought "that's close enough," and moved on. The official lookup takes 5 minutes. The restocking fee is $40. The embarrassment is free but never goes away.
To be fair, cross-reference charts aren't perfect either. But they're right about 90% of the time in my experience. The missing 10% is why Step 7 exists.

Step 6: Verify the Oil Type — the One Everybody Skips
Here's the check I didn't know about until my third year ordering parts. Compressors come with different oils:
- Mineral oil — used with R12 and some R22 systems
- POE (polyolester) oil — required for R134a and many HFC refrigerants
If you're retrofitting an old R12 system to R134a, the compressor's oil has to match the refrigerant, or lubrication breaks down and the compressor runs hot and dies early. A $250 compressor failing in 90 days because a spec line wasn't read — that's a hard way to learn, and I've watched it happen to a colleague.
The oil type is buried in the spec sheet for the compressor model, and it's not always visible on cross-reference charts. Read the spec sheet.
Check: What oil is in the compressor you're ordering? Does it match the refrigerant?
Step 7: Measure the Physical Dimensions and Connection Sizes
The replacement can have the right refrigerant, the right voltage, the right oil — and still not fit the unit. Ask me how I know.
In March 2023, I ordered what the catalog listed as the replacement for an older Tecumseh model. Right specs, right refrigerant, right oil. What I didn't check: the discharge tube orientation. The new compressor's discharge line pointed the wrong way, and there wasn't enough clearance to bend it where it needed to go. $230 down, $42 return shipping, $40 restocking fee, two days of customer downtime. Start Components Are Not Optional
The relay and overload wear out at roughly the same pace as the compressor. If the compressor locked, the start relay is often not far behind. Ordering a new relay while you're at it is cheap insurance.
