I've handled Tecumseh compressor orders for six years, and I keep a checklist now because I learned the hard way. In 2018, I sold a replacement compressor for a small deli's walk-in cooler that did not need one. The order was $890. The compressor was not the problem. The condenser coil was choked with dust, and the condenser fan motor had stopped. The compressor's internal overload was tripping because it couldn't reject heat. A $180 fan motor and a coil cleaning fixed the unit.
That mistake shaped the way I handle every quote. There is no universal answer to the question: is my Tecumseh compressor dead? The useful answer depends on which failure branch you are in. This article walks through the three branches that cause most refrigeration, air conditioning, and furnace service calls:

What is a heat exchanger, in plain terms
Before you can pick a branch, you need one definition. The U.S. Department of Energy describes a heat exchanger as a device that transfers heat from one fluid to another. That sounds academic, but it explains almost every misdiagnosis I see.
A refrigeration system has at least two heat exchangers: the evaporator coil and the condenser coil. The Tecumseh compressor pumps refrigerant between them, but it does not create cooling by itself. If either coil cannot exchange heat, the system can fail while the compressor is still good.
A gas furnace or boiler has a heat exchanger too. Burning gas creates hot flue gases, and those gases heat air or water through metal walls. If the walls crack, flue gas can contaminate the air you are trying to heat. There is no compressor in that loop.
Branch 1: The system is not cooling, and the compressor seems like the obvious problem
You hit this branch when a walk-in cooler, reach-in, cold room, or air conditioner stops cooling. The compressor nameplate may read Tecumseh, and ordering a replacement seems logical. It often isn't logical yet.
Compressors are usually not the first component to fail. They fail because something else kills them: moisture, contaminated oil, slugging, low refrigerant flow, or repeated thermal overload from poor airflow across a coil. Replace the compressor without finding that cause, and the second compressor will likely fail early.
Check these before you order a Tecumseh compressor:
- Condenser coil cleanliness. A dirty coil is a heat exchanger failure, not a compressor failure.
- Evaporator coil frost. Frost or ice blocks heat transfer and can make the compressor short-cycle.
- Condenser fan motor and evaporator or blower motor. If either stops moving air, the compressor can run hot and trip on overload.
- Refrigerant circuit condition. Leaks, restrictions, and noncondensables can make a healthy compressor look bad.
According to AHRI Standard 540, compressor performance ratings are measured at specific operating conditions. That is why a parts order without pressure readings, amp draw, or at least a description of coil and fan condition is a guess. Since 2019, we've stopped 47 potential compressor orders by asking those questions first.
Sometimes the compressor genuinely is bad. The point is to prove it before spending money on a replacement.
We treat these checks the same for a one-person shop as for a national account. The small deli owner from 2018 still orders from us today. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential.
Branch 2: Gas-fired furnace or water heater — heat exchanger inspection first
Some search terms point here instead of toward a compressor. Some local searches are phrased as water heater inspection Tecumseh, and in that phrase Tecumseh is the town, not a compressor brand. A gas-fired tankless water heater has a heat exchanger, and scale build-up can create hot spots and early failure. A gas furnace with a cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide into living space. Neither of those is a compressor repair.
If you see any of these signs, you are on the heat exchanger branch:
- CO detector alarms after the burner runs
- Soot around the burner compartment
- Flame roll-out or delayed ignition
- Visible cracks, rust, or corrosion on the heat exchanger surface
- Furnace that trips the limit switch repeatedly, especially with weak airflow
A damaged heat exchanger is a shut-down-and-investigate situation. It is not something to patch and hope. A combustion analysis, visual inspection, or pressure check should be done by someone qualified.
Branch 3: Blower motor failure — or a search result mix-up
The phrase blower motor causes another branch split. In HVAC, a blower motor can be the indoor furnace fan that pushes air across the heat exchanger, a condenser fan motor that pushes air across the outdoor coil, or a small evaporator fan motor inside a refrigerated cabinet.
If no air is coming from the registers, the issue may be a blower motor, its capacitor, or a control board. The compressor can still be fine. If the blower wheel doesn't move, check the capacitor before condemning the motor. I have seen plenty of blower motor replacements that only needed a $25 capacitor.
Search intent can make this worse. Other people arrive after searching stihl backpack blower. A Stihl backpack blower and an HVAC blower motor share only the word blower. If that is your situation, this is the wrong branch. For everyone else: when a parts supplier asks which blower motor, be specific. Is it the indoor air blower, the condenser fan, or the evaporator fan?
Condenser fan motor failure is one of the most common misdiagnoses in refrigeration. The compressor gets hot, trips its internal overload, and looks dead. In reality, the compressor is trying to run against a condenser coil with no airflow. That is exactly what happened in the 2018 story.
How to tell which branch you are in
Use this sequence instead of guessing:
- Does the equipment burn gas, oil, or propane and have no cooling circuit? If yes, start on the heat exchanger and combustion branch, not the compressor branch.
- Does the system have a compressor, but the indoor blower is not moving air? Fix the airflow problem first. The compressor may be fine.
- Is the condenser coil clean, and is the condenser fan spinning? If not, fix those before ordering a compressor.
- If the condenser coil is clean, the fans are working, and the compressor still short-cycles, runs hot, draws high amps, or fails the electrical checks, now investigate the compressor itself.
When you call a supplier, lead with a specific sentence: this is a reach-in cooler, it is not cooling, the condenser coil is clean, the condenser fan is running, the compressor is hot, and the amp draw is blank. That one sentence prevents an $890 mistake.
Bottom line
I sell Tecumseh compressor replacements without apology. But selling the wrong one helps no one. Every system is a chain of decisions: heat exchanger surface first, airflow and fans next, refrigerant circuit and compressor last. That order has saved our customers money and kept our counter credible.
